Mentors Make a Difference

One of the things we hear consistently about working with at-risk youth is that mentoring can make a big difference.  There are some really compelling news stories about the good that mentors can do for young people, one of the most recent involves an initiative in Medford, Oregon which aims to overcome barriers to young Hispanics remaining in school and (in some cases) pursuing a college education.  Having volunteer mentors from a variety of backgrounds also exposes young people to a number of different possibilities for their lives.

This brings me to Daniel Bassill's Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC) blog.  We were introduced to T/MC as a result of the NonProfit Blog Exchange's "Virtual Event #5" which sounds like the title for a contemporary jazz song but is actually a way for nonprofit bloggers to be introduced and explore each other's offerings.  The T/MC blog is committed to exploring the valuable contributions that tutoring and mentoring make to young people's lives.  Daniel's website also led me to a number of other links related to his work with 7th-12th grade students from the Cabrini-Green housing project in Chicago.  There are some great resources on this latter webpage for anyone interested in starting a volunteer tutoring/mentoring program of their own -- just check out the tab labelled 'volunteers' and the links on the right-hand side to resources.  The Volunteer Handbook alone is filled with useful suggestions for effective and youth-sensitive tutoring and mentoring.

For anyone looking at mentoring as a smart solution to the challenge of keeping young people engaged and in school I think Daniel's blog is a great place to get involved and stay engaged.
