While my alma mater the University of Alabama is perhaps best know for its prowess on the athletic fields, a recent alumni magazine article pointed to another winning season in another arena—community health. More than 30 years ago, the University at Tuscaloosa joined with the Medical School in Birmingham (UAB) to establish the College of Community Health Sciences (CCHS) with the intent of providing medical care to underserved Alabama communities. During its history CCHS has trained over 300 Family Practitioners. More than half of those have stayed in Alabama and half of those serve towns of 25,000 populations or less. In addition the University has established an array of programs, Partners for Rural Health, aimed at improving health delivery in rural, underserved areas. Another great example of higher education stepping up and out to meet the needs of its own community, state, and region.
