Vaughn Grisham is one of the leaders in the field of community development. Probably best known for his exhaustive work on the successes of Tupelo, MS, Vaughn is also a skilled teacher and mentor. One day last week he invited me to sit in via phone with a graduate class who has my book, Smart Communities, as one of its major texts. The students, at the invitation of the town of Okolona, MS, are working with local citizens to develop plans and processes that will allow the community to improve its chances for success.
The students had great questions; many focusing on how they can actually get the community to come together around some big issues. We talked about barriers—both human and otherwise—as well as ideas that they had on issues or a circumstance that could prove to all involved that positive change is not only possible but also a good idea. The encouraging part of the class of course is that they are having a very, hands-on experience in a community grounded on best practice and theory. That is exactly what higher education/community partnerships do when they work: bring solid, well-tested practice and theory to bear on real life issues.
