In January I was the guest of community leadership programs in Knox, Blount and Sevier counties and Maryville College and spoke to current and alumni members as well as staff. Later in the day I led a seminar with 60 leaders from around the region.
The leadership programs are well established and have great track records for building thriving communities. The afternoon session was very interesting. Among the participants in the session were bankers, chamber of commerce representatives, business owners, university and college administrators, and county officials representing Anderson, Blount, Knox, and Sevier counties. The afternoon conversation focused on the particular and collective facts about the counties and the region with one question in mind—how can the region—these four counties and others—position themselves for a win-win situation?
This is a region that is poised strategically for going to the next level of economic and social prosperity. Why? Plenty of talent for sure as was evidenced by the leaders engaged: a strong presence of higher education; Oak Ridge Laboratories; the Smokey Mountains; and the millions of visitors they bring …. the list goes on.
What are their challenges? First, building a sense of confidence across the region that "it can be done!" Second, continuing to cultivate new leadership and new ideas. Third, working on education—like many regions too few children are graduating from high school and too few are pursuing higher education. This is the key to economic and community prosperity. Finally, connecting the dots and leveraging the incredible assets that exist.
From the folks I met, I would place my bet on East Tennessee setting the pace for the rest of us.
