A study recently released in Canada indicates that those Canadians who receive their news from a variety of sources (e.g. newspaper, television, radio, internet) take part in more political activities than those who only get their news from television. TV-only news consumers had the same pattern of political engagement as those who watched no news at all. The study was conducted by Statistics Canada and appeared in the March 2007 issue of Canadian Social Trends under the title "Keeping Up with the Times: Canadians and their News Media Diet".
These findings repeat what previous research demonstrated, television was actually dubbed a "cool" medium on the basis of such research. There were some interesting findings mentioned in the study including the fact that newspapers continue a strong showing (second only to television) as a source of news and that Canadians who speak French in the home have the greatest likelihood of watching the news several times weekly. An article in the Globe and Mail as well as an extensive story published on the CTV website have full details on the study.
