Poverty Addressed through Dialogue, Leadership, and Vision

The Pew Partnership for Civic Change is a partner with St. Paul, MN-based Northwest Area Foundation in its innovative poverty reduction program Horizons.  With a goal of helping northwestern towns of 5,000 or less reduce the burdens associated with significant poverty, the foundation has partnered with university extension offices and designed a project with a three-pronged approach:

* encourage dialogue and joint learning through the Study Circles process
* prepare community members with the skills to solve problems through our LeadershipPlenty program
* put plans into action through an extensive visioning process

For our part we have trained almost 500 trainers to offer LeadershipPlenty in more than 50 communities spread across Washington, Montana, Idaho, Minnesota, Iowa, and North & South Dakota.  By this time next year (using a very rough estimate) we anticipate there will be 4,000 - 5,000 newly trained civic leaders across the northwest working together to reduce poverty and build thriving communities.

All we can say is "congratulations" to the hundreds of community members we have trained and to the rest of the country -- stay tuned.  Things are about to change in these states.
