Here are a few updates on what's new with the Learning to Finish wiki:
* We put out a call last week for help in developing the wiki article related to Hispanic youth and dropout prevention. The good folks at Hispanic.com heard our cry and are helping out by posting a request for help. Maybe one of our readers would like to try their hand at organizing this section? A reminder that we're willing to help get you registered and posting, just drop us a line.
* New dropout numbers are available in the article on dropout and graduation rate data. We previously just had a state-by-state comparison but we've added numbers that describe dropout rates broken down by sex and race or ethnicity. The wiki language is pretty easy, it only took about 20 minutes to paste data to the page, format it into a chart, and add a reference citation. Of course, since most of the pages already have some formatting it is easy to copy the existing style :-)
* If you haven't seen what Daniel Bassill has done with the portion of the wiki devoted to designing a mentorship program then you're missing out. He has put together a section that's a nice blend of expert knowledge, practical advice, and relevant facts and statistics. A big 'thank you' to him and Tutor/Mentor Connection for all their efforts.
* A new article was added about the National Guard Youth Challenge Program that is being highlight by a Brookings Institution researcher. As you'll see if you click through the link we're seeking some participation on this article.
* Finally, a group called Common Craft has produced a video about what a wiki is and how it's useful. We've added a link to the video from our tutorial page because it's a fun, easy way to learn about wikis.
I hope that visitors to this blog will visit the wiki and use the ideas to support their own efforts to build more comprehensive volunteer-based support structures in high poverty neighborhoods. At http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2007/06/follow-up-to-may-tutormentor-leadership.html you can read about how we're following up with the May 2007 Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference in Chicago, working with programs, universities and others, so that when school starts in August there will be a few more good tutor/mentor programs, and there will be an advertising campaign that is encouraging volunteers and donors to support these programs.
