No matter your political persuasion, yesterday's nomination of Barack Obama on the 45th anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech by Dr. King was historic. While I don't think the nomination means that we have gotten to the mountain as a country but it is a giant step. But whether our next president is named Barack or John, we had better invest in making some of our dreams for our country come true.
There will be lots of promise in this seven-day period of convention rhetoric but we better demand some meat. This is a country that can do anything it sets its mind to do. If we need to ration water or oil or food, we can do it. If we need to sandbag the overflowing banks of the Mississippi River, we can do it. If we need to help disaster victims, we can do it. OK let's do it. Let's rebuild New Orleans better than before, let's insure more Americans, and let's give poor kids the chance they need. Those are my dreams. What are yours?
Enjoy your weekend.
My dream is that every political leader will put maps of his/her district on his web site, with layers of information showing what the major problems and opportunities are, and who the organizations are who may already be trying to solve such programs.
The maps could be accompanied by concept maps and visualizations, that help people who have different backgrounds and experiences understand the issues from a common framework, which would lead to more consistent efforts to solve common problems.
Then, whenever a speech is given, the leader can point to the maps and charts, and say, "here is where we do the work of making America great. Here is where volunteers, and donors and business partners are needed to solve the problems, or meet the opportunities in my district."
You can see an example of such a map at http://mappingforjustice.blogspot.com/2008/08/working-with-maps-and-politicians-to.html
More maps, and examples of visualization can be found at http://tutormentor.blogspot.com
Generals use maps to lead armies into battle. Since much of the coming election will focus on who is better equipped to be the Commander in Chief, each campaign has the opportunity to demonstrate their thinking with the maps and charts they put on their web sites, and the way they use their visibility to draw people to volunteer time and talent and dollars to help people in places where the enemy is poverty, or pollution, or disease or lack of jobs.
